Film in Music is a project conceived in 2009 as a musical response to writer/creator David Milch’s brilliant HBO series, Deadwood. Forming an eight piece band of improvisers from Vancouver’s deep and varied creative music community, Peggy likened the players to characters in a story and wanted to give them each a chance to voice their individual ideas in unaccompanied solos and in small ensembles within the framework of a musical suite. The eight composed sections of the music imply the arc of a story but they are also intended as launching pads for the players to then make extended improvised statements that take the listener on a journey that is never the same twice .
Film in Music premiered at the Ironworks in Vancouver in December, 2009 with:
Kevin Elaschuk, trumpet
Jesse Zubot, violin
Dylan van der Schyff, drums
Torsten Müller, acoustic bass
Peggy Lee, cello
André Lachance, electric bass
Chris Gestrin, Fender Rhodes
Ron Samworth, guitar
Since its premiere, the group has performed at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival(2010) and as a part of Peggy’s residency at El Barrio in Vancouver, June 2012.

"Imagine a modern-day Duke Ellington combo spiced up with shards of noise, and you’d be on the right track; it’s music that combines the timeless and the otherworldly in equal measure." The Georgia Straight
"Elite Vancouver musicians join Lee exploring deep cinematic textural journeying and Zen-like moments. Haunting solos transcend from the rapturous Lee." Downbeat
"…. strongly tonal, even tuneful, and there’s a kind of drifting feeling that suggests the Old West touched by a certain dissonant grit, the combination strongly suggestive of Bill Frisell’s off-kilter Western themes…" The Whole Note
"This entire disc is more like a journey or series of stories, moving gracefully from scene to scene. Another winner from the ever-expanding Vancouver scene. Don't miss it." Downtown Music Gallery (New York)
